Was reading an old Mojo magazine (Nov 2008)about the making of Combat Rock and came across a section of the article describing Mick Jones' original mix of Combat Rock called "Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg". The article laid out all the differences between that mix and the final album produced by Glyn Johns and it sparked my interest. A friend of mine got a copy of the Rat Patrol mix and played it for me and I thought it was fantastic. There are three excellent songs on the mix that I don't think have ever been released - The Beautiful People are Ugly Too; Kill Time and a very cool 7 min instrumental written by Topper called Walk Evil Talk; they were all killed in final production. In addition, many of the other songs that made the final album are here as well but in somewhat different form - Should I Stay has a Gary Barnacle sax part, Casbah has a bongo intro, Car Jamming has car horns/guitar effects near the end, Know Your Rights is sung a bit differently and contains different guitar effects, and most of the songs are generally longer than the final album versions. The sound quality is OK on Rat Patrol but a few songs seemed rough and could use some sound clean-up. After hearing the mix I wondered whether the tape still exists and if so thought a 30th Anniversary version of Combat Rock with sound enhanced Rat Patrol would be a great idea. Anyone else heard it and think the idea is good? How do we get it to someone who could do something about it by 2012?
